Becoming Referee

USSF CERTIFICATION FOR AFFILIATED YOUTH AND AMATEUR GAMES

All affiliated Eastern New York leagues require referees to be be certified with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF). This means you must attend a USSF referee certification class to become an eligible and active soccer referee.  These classes are offered by organizations like the HVSRA.

The HVSRA offers USSF grade 7, USSF grade 8, and in limited cases the USSF grade 9 recreational referee courses in the Mid Hudson Valley area.

Please refer to the Course Schedule to find out about available courses. You can also find courses schedule outside of HVSRA on the Eastern New York Soccer Referee’s Association.

USSF GRADE 7 REFEREE

A USSF grade 7 referee is an experienced referee in the state and is qualified to officiate all but the highest levels of amateur soccer.

The grade 7 course focuses on topics like these:

  • game management
  • reading the play
  • teamwork
  • outside agents
  • dissent
  • mass confrontation
  • advantage
  • report writing
  • contact above the shoulder
  • other aspects critical to higher level games

USSF GRADE 8 REFEREE

Most referees begin their careers as USSF grade 8 referee after they take the entry training course and pass the examination. A USSF grade 8 referee can officiate adult matches in addition to youth travel matches.

The grade 8 course consists of completing the required on-line modules, which takes about 3 hours, and subsequently attending 8 hours of in-class instruction at an available USSF certification course.

After a candidate completes the course, he or she is registered as USSF grade 8 referees with the United States Soccer Federation.

USSF GRADE 9 RECREATIONAL REFEREE

A USSF grade 9 recreational referee can officiate games as either a referee or assistant referee (AR) for recreational youth games – for kids under 14 years of age and younger. They can also referee in small-sided travel games (u12 and below) but cannot officiate:

  • Older ages (above 14)
  • Travel youth matches (above u12)
  • Any adult matches

The grade 9 course consists of a one-day, eight-hour class. Upon successful completion of the course, candidates are registered as USSF grade 9 recreational referees with the United States Soccer Federation.
